Balance is drawn down before your card is charged, which makes it an effective spending cap — genuinely useful for a child's device, or for anyone who has been surprised by an in-app bill.
It does not cover: Apple hardware from the Apple Store, and — the important one — subscriptions you signed up for directly on a third party's website. Family Sharing, gifting and the balance question
Two details that come up constantly and are genuinely confusing.
Apple Account balance is not shared through Family Sharing. Purchases can be shared; balance cannot. If you load a card onto your own Apple ID expecting a family member to spend it, that is not how it works — you would need to redeem the code on their account. This is straightforward once you know, and a wasted purchase if you do not.
